Katherine Helmond was an American television actress and director. She played memorable roles as “Jessica Tate” on Soap, “Mona Robinson” on Who’s the Boss? and “Lois Whelan” on Everybody Loves Raymond. Her film credits include Brazil (1985), Family Plot (1994) and Lady in White (1988). She voiced the character “Lizzie” for the animated film Cars (2006) and two sequels.

Helmond was born on July 5, 1929, to parents Joseph and Thelma. She grew up in Galveston, Texas, where she attended Catholic school. Helmond attended Bob Jones University for a year in 1955 but never graduated. She also taught acting in university theatre programs.

CAREER
Helmond made her acting debut in the 1960s but her big break came in the 1970s. One of her first television appearances was an uncredited role in the NBC sitcom ‘Car 54, Where Are You?’ starring Joe E. Ross and Fred Gwynne. Her big screen debut was the romantic drama film, Believe in Me (1971). In the 70s, Helmond appeared on shows like Gunsmoke, The Rookies, Barnaby Jones, and The Bionic Woman. She portrayed “Emma Borden” in the TV film The Legend of Lizzie Borden (1975) and “Emily Dickinson” in the PBS series Meeting of Minds (1977). She received a Tony Award nod in 1973 for Eugene O’Neill’s The Great God Brown.

In 1977, Helmond was cast as “Jessica Tate” on the ABC sitcom Soap. She appeared in a total of 85 episodes, won a Golden Globe Award, and was nominated for 4 Emmy Awards. Helmond picked up her second Golden Globe Award for her role of “Mona Robinson” in ABC’s Who’s the Boss? (1984-92). Her television credits also include Benson, The Love Boat, Coach, Everybody Loves Raymond, and Providence. Helmond earned a Saturn Award nomination for her supporting role in the horror flick Lady in White (1988). She lent her voice to the Disney animated film Cars (2006). Other notable films include Family Plot (1976) with Bruce Dern, Brazil (1985) with Jonathan Pryce. Her last film role was that of “Betty Burns” in Frank and Ava (2018).
