Water main breaks, airport area affected | News, Sports, Jobs
A break in an 8-inch water main left Kahului Airport and nearly a dozen nearby businesses without water for more than two hours Wednesday morning, according to Maui County spokesman Rod Antone.
Customers began reporting low water pressure and no service around 6 a.m., he said. Affected businesses included Maui Electric Co., Home Depot, the Courtyard Marriott, Walmart and the airport.
Department of Water Supply crews located and isolated the break on the Kanaha side of the airport, Antone said. The break was bypassed and service restored to the area at around 8:30 a.m.
On its Facebook page, the state Department of Transportation advised travelers that there was a water outage at the airport and reported that it planned to bring in portable restrooms. Later, the department reported the return of water service and the reopening of restaurants and restrooms.
