Kameo Fighters in Mortal Kombat 1 are unique assist characters that are chosen separately from the standard roster. They help you out in fights using Special Moves, Throws, and Breakers. Many of these Kameo Fighters were revealed during the Summer Game Fest 2023 Mortal Kombat 1 gameplay showcase, though the inclusion of our favorite cowboy, Erron Black, as a Kameo Fighter, was confirmed by the co-creator of Mortal Kombat himself, Ed Boon, on Twitter.
Each Kameo Fighter you can choose from is unique, bringing with them their own offensive and defensive moves to aid you in battle and hopefully turn the tide in your favor. For example, Kameo Sonya Blade is great for getting an opening, letting you take advantage of her ground combos like leg grab, or extend air combos. Kameo Jax, on the other hand, has a ground pound and air grab that can be useful for interrupting your opponent.
Kameo Fighters aren’t just for combos though, as they can also assist you when performing Mortal Kombat 1 fatalities, even sometimes taking the spotlight to perform them instead of your main playable character.
You will pick your Kameo Fighter after you select your playable character, letting you use some of their moves multiple times throughout a battle. Furthermore, some characters feature on both the main roster and the Kameo roster, so for instance you can technically play as Sub Zero while also having Sub Zero as your Kameo Fighter. No doubt, players will have a lot of fun experimenting with different combinations and fighting pairs using the Kameo Fighter system.
Many of the Kameo Fighters are actually a callback to the history of Mortal Kombat, with characters like Goro appearing as a Kameo Fighter, or Sonya wearing her Mortal Kombat 3 outfit.
Below you can find a deeper dive into each Mortal Kombat 1 Kameo Fighter, including any available details we have on their moves and fatalities.
Jax Briggs
In the original timeline, Jax Briggs was a cybernetically-enhanced soldier and direct superior of Sonya Blade. While he isn’t playable in MK1, Jax Briggs is still a hard-hitting Kameo Fighter, despite being much younger this time around and not having his cybernetics for help.
His fatality is a callback to his original, where he grows in size and stomps on his opponent, however, this move was made more popular by Ermac in MK9, with him using his magic to shrink the other player instead.
Kano
Kano has been trouble for many who interact with him since his debut, with the leader of the Black Dragon typically antagonizing Sonya Blade, as well as other members of the Special Forces. Much like most of the Kameo Fighters, Kano seems a lot younger in the new timeline.
Using his cybernetic eye, Kano can fire out lasers at will which can stop your opponents during their combos, but he’s also extremely proficient with weapons like daggers, which could be deadly to those who don’t expect it.
Darrius
Darrius is mainly known for inciting the riots within the Realm of Order, fittingly called Orderrealm, but has little backstory aside from that. He is believed to be a visionary by those who look up to him, but he mainly uses schemes to fit his own ambitions.
In Mortal Kombat 1, Darrius seems to use his strength and speed to hurt those in his path, but there’s not much gameplay of him just yet. Looks like we’ll need to wait until closer to launch.
Kung Lao
Recognizable by his iconic hat (which in the story, seems to not have received its razor-sharp edge just yet), Kung Lao is one of Earthrealm’s protectors, alongside that of the Liu Kang. He’d rather live his life peacefully, but with the ongoing violence in the Mortal Kombat universe, well, that’s not possible.
He offers a flurry of fast attacks that can make it difficult for his opponent to decipher. He’s also a standard fighter in the character roster too.
Sonya Blade
After falling to her fate in Mortal Kombat 11, Sonya’s younger self returned thanks to Kronika’s timeline-bending shenanigans. However, even in a new timeline, it seems like we’re stuck with the younger Sonya Blade for now, who hasn’t married Johnny Cage and had her daughter, Cassie, just yet.
Sporting a similar outfit to her character in MK3, Sonya Blade is useful against enemies performing air attacks by stopping them in their tracks, or great for continuing your juggle combos.
Sub-Zero
The original Sub-Zero is back in Mortal Kombat 1, with Bi-Han once again being the person behind the mantle. In previous installments, Bi-Han was the wraith Noob Saibot, following his death in the first Mortal Kombat game.
Little gameplay has been shown of Sub-Zero as a Kameo Fighter, with most trailers focusing on his playable version, but we believe that Sub-Zero will be a great disruptor thanks to his icy powers.
Goro
An ally to the sorcerer Shang Tsung, who is known to be trouble to our protagonists, Goro is an Outworld Shokan, a half-human and half-dragon creature capable of huge feats of strength as well as brutality.
The only move we’ve seen Goro use is one where he stomps on a downed opponent, which goes to prove that his brutality remains across refreshing timelines. We imagine that his particular skillset will remain with other moves too.
Stryker
Stryker is a resilient hand-to-hand combat specialist, who makes up for his lack of powers with expertise in modern weaponry. In the original timeline, Stryker was the leader of the Special Riot team in the New York Police, who Raiden took notice of and enlisted his help in the defense of Earthrealm.
The only attack we know of for Stryker in MK1 is that he has a flashlight that blinds the enemy, with the opponent being stuck in the animation for a decent few seconds, indicating it could do quite some damage to the other player.
Cyrax
Before the new timeline, Cyrax was a Lin Kuei assassin who was turned into a cyborg through the Cyborg Initiative, often being portrayed as a misinterpreted villain. From MK9, he was a loyal Lin Kuei assassin who hated the cyborg program, attempting to destroy the clan when his soul is returned.
There’s only one move that we know Kameo Cyrax can perform right now, and that’s one where he stands next to an opponent, ticking down a bomb until it explodes, causing an enemy to be launched into the air and ready for you to juggle them.
Sektor
Remorseless and brutal, this former Grandmaster of the Lin Kuei and Cyborg Lin Kuei is known to be a thorn in the side of our protagonists Sub-Zero and Scorpion. Sektor has no interest in realizing his former human side, focusing on being a lethal, uncaring cyborg ninja.
In the Mortal Kombat 1 Lin Kuei trailer, we can see Sektor interrupt Kung Lao during a jump attack with a chest bump, as well as teleporting underneath him and launching upwards. It seems like he’s a pretty fast Kameo Fighter, which would be great for any slower characters in the roster.
Frost
An incredible assassin who stood aside Sub-Zero in the Lin Kuei, in the former timelines, Frost fell to darkness as she hated her master for choosing to make amends with Scorpion, attempting to defeat him in combat. Ultimately, Frost failed, being banished from the Lin Kuei.
Unfortunately, we’re not sure how Frost works as a Kameo Fighter, as she only made a short appearance during the Lin Kuei trailer for the game. However, we expect her to be a fairly agile Kameo character, given her skills as an assassin in previous Mortal Kombat games.
Sareena
A demon from the Netherrealm, Sareena appears human at first but can show her strong and brutal demonic form at will. In the original timeline, she was an assassin for Quan Chi before revolting and making an alliance with Sub-Zero and the Lin Kuei. However, she has been MIA as a fighting character since Mortal Kombat Armageddon, making small cameos in MKX and MK11.
As a Kameo Fighter, Sareena offers an extremely agile move set, capable of hitting enemies with her whipping tail or throwing fiery daggers at them.
Motaro
As a Centaurian, Motaro is constantly at odds with the Shokan, as both races jostle with one-another to show their loyalty to Shao Kahn. Originally introduced as the sub-boss of Mortal Kombat 3, Motaro stands at ~nine feet tall on all-fours. Thanks to his prominent horns and metallic tail, Motaro can cause all kinds of problems for his prey.
Shujinko
Having debuted in Mortal Kombat Deception, Shujinko is a master of mimicry, and has been able to assimilate a number of fighting styles throughout his cross-realm travels. Though he is considered the protagonist of Deception, Shujinko is far more morally-ambiguous than meets the eye – he is a Mortal Kombat character, after all.
Scorpion
Scorpion is another of the main roster characters that is on the Kameo roster. He can pull your opponents in, catch them off guard, and use his air combos to extend your combos, making him a great fit for characters like Nitara and characters without much rushdown potential.
